| The wonderful fresco of Panagia Kassopitra. |
At the end of the main street of Kassiopi, 20 meters from the waterfront.
The church is hidden behind a white stone fence and a cast iron gate. It is built on the foundations of a Roman temple and has been around, as a religious site, in one form or another, for around 2,000 years. The early Christian structure was destroyed by the pirate Barbarossa and then was rebuilt, lastly by the Venetians in 1580.
On May 8 the church celebrates the healing from blindness, many years ago, of a young boy who, the legend says, was presented to the icon of the Holy Mother ("Panagia") and saw again. |
